Pure Element Health & Training
As I mentioned in my last blog, Dr. Jan Venter from Fusium Medical Clinic (www.f2c2.ca) and (myself) Kelly Nitchie BHK, CEP-CPT, CSCS, RK(C), BCRPA from Pure Element Health & Training (www.pureelement.ca) recently flew to Quesnel British Columbia to participate in a hands on, two day intense workshop, learning how to use a variety of fitness assessing equipment.
I had the great opportunity to meet Juerg Feldmann (Swiss trained Physical Therapist) and Herb Chlebek (Expert Computer Technologist) from Fact-Canada (www.fact-canada.com). Juerg and his family were kind enough to allow myself and Dr. Venter to stay at their home, while we stayed in Quesnel.
Day one at Juergs Clinic consisted of an introduction to his facility. Wow, I’ve got to say owning (or leasing), in Quesnel would be awesome. He has approximately 1200-1500 square feet of space available for his clientele, with three private rooms to perform assessments. The facility is full of equipment I had no idea even existed. But, what caught my eye is the front room that had all the cardiovascular equipment (Monark bike, Cross Trainer, Treadmill (both hard and soft surfaces), recumbent bike, rowing machine, Tacx trainer etc…) with lab-tops connected to each machine so that athletes can be tested to their specific sport.
That night after dinner, we had an opportunity to learn about the SpiroTiger. Now with the name aside, this device is pretty cool. As we know, when we train we all have some sort of limitation(s) that create(s) energy leaks (or for that matter, we use more energy to try and maintain our limiting system(s) efficiently). Unfortunately, what happens to many athletes is that they are limited not by their circulatory system, or musculoskeletal system, but, their respiratory system. This in effect, will decrease the ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems to supply oxygen (the necessity ELEMENT to create ATP in the Mitochondria) to skeletal muscles during sustained physical activity. Now, I am talking about the ability to bring O2 into the body, not the bodies’ ability to uptake the O2 in the capillaries. If you follow the steps of glycolysis, through the Kreb cycle and to the Electron Transport chain the last element is O2, and as we know, to be working Oxygen dependent, is to be working in an aerobic state. Is it not true that O2 is needed to allow for fatty oxidation? And is it also not true that fat has more then double the amount of energy/gram then CHO, and Protein? Then why not create the proper breathing pattern and rate, to allow for greatest O2 saturation so that you increase the possibilities to use higher energy dense nutrients.
Well this is exactly what the SpiroTiger will help you do. The SpiroTiger is the “LSD” training for the diaphragm – long slow endurance training with all the benefits of “overload” on a muscle that you normally can’t work during regular training. If you were to guess, the functions of vital organs such as the heart, the brain and respiration are maintained by the body as its “top priority”. Even under maximum stress, these organs are supplied with sufficient oxygen and energy regardless the situation. This happens at the expense of non-vital functions: Oxygen-supply to the legs and arms is reduced. The consequence is a substantial decrease in vitality and a quick build-up of hyperacidity due to H+ production. The SpiroTiger will train your respiratory system to increase air volume in and out of the lungs, to increase O2 intake with increased air distribution to the whole lung, as well as deep expiration with avoiding air entrapment to get rid of the CO2. Airflow, air speed, air pressure, air volume, proper diaphragm contraction, avoiding auxiliary activation (breathing from the chest), will be improved.
In the second day is were we had a lot of hands on training with all the other testing devices. The Fitmate pro is a portable device that is used to perform fitness assessments and functional evaluations. Take it as you will, but this device is used on the reality show the “biggest loser” (I know laugh), but once again the potential of this machine is endless. I do not want to force you to read everything the fitmate pro does, so I will send you a link http://www.fact-canada.com/Fitmate/Cosmed-fitmate.html and you can decide if you are interested. But, the video below gives you an idea of what it looks like and how viable this machine really is. Please watch the video below.
Then of course the machine of all machines, the Physio flow. Where do I start with this machine? It is pretty much the savour to invasive testing protocols in a non-invasive method. PhysioFlow® Signal Morphology-based Impedance Cardiography (SM-ICG™) technology succeeds on patients in motion because its patented algorithm is more tolerant of motion artifacts. What??? ok let me explain. Due to the vast amount of errors associated with bio-impedance machines, they are unreliable because the machine testing uses a volumetric approach assuming that we are all the same volume, and not even get me started with the hydration levels and the speed of the signal. Anyways, this machine uses a morphological approach. What is morphology?? Well, morphology in biology refers to form, structure and configuration of an organism. This includes aspects of the outward appearance (shape, structure, colour, and pattern) as well as the form and structure of the internal parts like bones and organs. PhysioFlow’s patented, SM-ICG™ approach does not depend on determination of baseline thoracic impedance (Z0), which is the source of major limitations of conventional ICG (aka Bio-impedance). Long story short we can measure your heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output/index, contractility index, early diastolic filling ratio (indicator of preload), ejection fraction and end diastolic volume (estimates), blood pressure profile (SAP, DAP, MAP), systemic vascular resistance/index and, left cardiac work index accurately.
With access to this equipment we are able to find your limitations so we can fix it.
If you are interested in finding any of your limitations to training, feel free to contact either myself Kelly Nitchie (604)-671-6857 or visit my website at www.pureelement.ca OR you can visit Dr. Jan Venter’s website at www.f2c2.com
Cheers,
Kelly Nitchie
Kelly Nitchie from Pure Element Health and Training www.pureelement.ca and Dr. Jan Venter from Fusium Medical Clinic www.f2c2.com are flying to Quesnal British Columbia on Sunday September 27th/2009 returning September 28th/2009, to participate in an extensive workshop.
FaCT Canada www.fact-canada.com the leading edge for sport performance technology experts will be teaching us the proper guidelines and skills to successfully perform all protocols, and assessments.
Below is some of the Equipment that Dr. Venter and Kelly Nitchie have access to for all ranges of clientele.
PhysioFlow Non-Invasive Cardiac Output Hemodynamic Monitoring.
PhysioFlow Enduro is a small and portable, battery-powered, noninvasive cardiac output device that was designed primarily to be used while a subject (or patient) is exercising. Enduro is unique in that it is the only noninvasive device that can reliably and repeatedly provide cardiac output and other hemodynamic parameters during exercise. PhysioFlow also measures; heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output/index, contractility index, early diastolic filling ratio, and estimation of ejection fraction and end diastolic volume, blood pressure profile, systemic vascular resistance index, and left cardiac work index.
Cosmed Fitmate Pro
Cosmed Fitmate PRO is the smallest laboratory available in the world able to perform fitness assessment and functional evaluation on individuals willing to receive clear and comprehensive feedback concerning their wellness and physical fitness conditions. It has Highly accurate measurements of Metabolic Rate, VO2, and VO2max.
With access to this equipment Dr. Venter and Kelly Nitchie are able to assess functional capacity, assess Cardio-respiratory fitness (CRF), perform Fitness assessments, calculate caloric cost including RMR & Daily Caloric Intake, create Weight management programs, and accuratley measure Body composition for their clients.
Lactate Pro Portable Lactate Analyzer
Lactate Pro Portable Lactate Analyzer is used by sport scientists, coaches and athletes to accurately determine Heart Rate training zones, recovery and much more. Lactate is a metabolic product that can be measured by taking a drop of blood at a finger tip the same way diabetics monitor their blood sugar level. The blood lactate level increases with exercise intensity and shows clearly the transition from aerobic to anaerobic activity.
Why is this important? Lactate measurement is far more precise than the outdated and inaccurate method of using percentages of maximum heart rate to set training zones (aka. Karvonen Formula). Because heart rate is an individual response, heart rate training zones need to be determined by measurement of physiological variables not set by mathematical formulas.
Dr. Jan Venter and Kelly Nitchie are very excited to have teamed up and to offer such advanced equipment in helping get our clients to the next level of training.
